Hervey Joseph Gautreau was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on August 7, 1928, to Frederic and Marie Rose (Cormier) Gautreau. He grew up in Lynn with his parents and nine siblings. Hervey and his wife, Cecile, had four sons: Paul, Michael, Peter and E.J.
Hervey attended St. Jean’s Catholic school from the first grade through junior high. He attended the Juniorate with his brothers Normand and Arthur for the first few years of high school before returning to St. Jean's high school where he graduated. He went to Boston College and graduated in 1951 with a degree in French. Hervey went on to earn his master’s degree – also majoring in French.
In 1957, after moving to California with his wife and oldest son, Paul, Hervey began his career as a French teacher and driver training instructor at West Covina high school. He also taught French at Mt. San Antonio Community College. In addition to his teaching roles, Hervey officiated local football games and coached the school's track and swim teams - traditions his four sons would carry on.
During his career as a teacher, football official and coach, Hervey gained the well-deserved reputation of a talented, caring and loving leader. It was impossible not to love him back. In 1988, Hervey retired and whenever he crossed paths with a former student, each encounter would inevitably begin with “Mr. Gautreau! You look just the same.” These comments – no doubt - because of Hervey’s infectious and ever-present smile.
In 1990, Hervey married Maria Caterinicchio. He and Maria loved to travel. Together, they enjoyed trips across the USA and Europe. They were particularly fond of Paris and its history and culture. Yet, wherever he was - at home or on the streets of Spain - Hervey never passed up an opportunity to partake in his guilty pleasure: a big scoop of strawberry ice cream.
Throughout his life, Hervey set the standard for what it meant to be a family man. Blessed with four children, ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, he made it a priority never to miss a family event. From birthday parties to baptisms to swim meets, little league games and school plays, he showed his love and support spreading joy on every occasion.
On September 22, 2022, Hervey passed away, surrounded by his loving family. He will be fondly remembered for his wisdom, his kindness, his capacity to love and for his constant and happy smile.
Hervey will forever be loved and deeply missed by all who knew him.
